Jackson Walker partners Tom Groves and Lisa Powell spoke at the Consulate General of Sweden on November 3, 2014, in Houston.
Mr. Groves and Ms. Powell presented a talk to an audience of expatriates and newcomers to Texas titled “How to Protect Your Family and Property While in Texas,” discussing legal issues relating to estate and asset protection planning for non-US citizens.
The Consulate General of Sweden in Houston provides assistance to Swedes, as well as to foreign nationals pursuing interests in Sweden. The Consulate also conducts cultural and business activities to promote Sweden in South Central US.
Mr. Groves is the Co–Chair of the Wealth Planning, Probate and Trusts section of Jackson Walker. He practices in the Wealth Planning and Transfer, Tax and International sections and is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He has extensive experience representing a wide variety of clients in all aspects of estate planning and estate and trust administration and has been named a “Texas Super Lawyers” by Thomson Reuters (2003, 2005, 2007, 2013). Mr. Groves received his B.A. degree from Southern Illinois University and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Southern Methodist University School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Notes and Comments Editor of the Southwestern Law Journal.
Ms. Powell is an experienced trial lawyer who represents businesses in disputes primarily involving financial and other commercial transactions. She represents clients in all types of settings: state and federal courts; bankruptcy courts; and arbitral tribunals, both domestic and international. She also helps clients mitigate and avoid risk before formal disputes arise. She received her A.B. from Indiana University – Bloomington and her J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University Mauer School of Law.
